Workshops with Kay Taylor

Workshop Charges
Workshops are £75 per hour + travel (and accommodation if necessary).  If Kay is travelling a considerable distance, it would be a minimum of 4 hours - this could be 2 separate workshops or one longer one.  If the workshops are local to Kay, the fee could be negotiated.
If Kay is teaching in your area for the weekend, she is happy to teach some private lessons as well though these should not be offered to beginners.  Discuss with Kay before arranging.
It may also be possible for Kay to bring the Farida souk depending on the event / numbers expected.

Kay is happy to design workshops specifically for a group.  If you know your girls need to work on arms .... then Kay will give suggestions around this.  As a starting point, check out the workshops below then e-mail or call Kay to discuss dates / subject matter.

Taster Workshops for non bellydancers, womens groups, health days, team building, hen parties etc

Effective Entrances
This can be pitched at any level and is a fun look at making an entrance with impact. The higher the level it is pitched at, the more we go into performance skills and bring technique into consideration. If at a lower level, it is more a confidence builder and leads into giving that solo a go!
Level: Open / Intermediate
Duration: 2 hours as a fun class. 4 hours if more in-depth / higher level

Dramatic Pauses
Kay Taylor explains how to add drama and emotion to your dance through effective pauses.  Doing nothing can be far more effective than doing too much.  A look at how to get the balance between movement and stillness.  Kay will use different styles of music to help explore these dramatic pauses.

Amazing Arms
Many people find amazing arms elusive.........yet we all have amazing arms, we just might not yet know how to make them amazing.  Starting with how to lift your arms, exploring stunning shapes and fluid moves.  Your arms might ache but Kay will give you some really useful ideas to take away and develop.

From Folk to Funk
Looking at the changes through the different styles of dance: Folk, Baladi, Oriental, Techno.Some discussion on musical styles and appropriate feel / technique.
Level: Open / Intermediate
Duration: Needs to be 3.5 or 4 hours

 

Meanings and Gestures
Help for non Arabic speaking dancers to identify key words and make the most of them. Can be pitched at any level and any length.

Sha'abi
What is Sha'abi?  How do you recognise it.....how do you dance to it?  Kay Taylor tells you stories about top Sha'abi  singers and introduces you to their music.  Sha'abi can be heard blaring out of taxi cabs in downtown Cairo.  It is completely different to any other style.  Kay explores the dangers of Sha'abi and how to dance to it. This is an open level fun and informative workshop

Mizmar Party
It has to be Saidi...... Kay will explore some basic saidi steps and combinations to use with stick/assaya.  They will be put together into a piece of upbeat and fun saidi choreography.  The first half hour will be drilling stick manipulations - how to hold it, twirling etc.  After that Kay will go on to look at some traditional saidi combinations which will be included in the chroeography she will then teach you.  A great piece to perfrom at prties - either as a group or solo.

Techno Technique
As it says - can be pitched at any level - modern precise technique from basic to intermediate using techno music.

Baladi Babes
Using a modern piece of baladi music, this class allows you to explore the Baladi style used in Cairo today. Fun and upbeat with sensual slow sections. Some improvisation required.
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 3.5 or 4 hours

 

Baladi Basics and Beyond
Explore the Baladi style of music and dance. Some discussion but mainly dance. Starting with basics and buildingon them. Technique and interpretation - you take it to your own level.
Level: Open / Intermediate
Duration: 2 - 3 hours

 

JWAAD Basics and Beyond
Starting with posture, exploring basic moves and building on these.  Kay Taylor is known for her clear, precise and well defined technique.  Here she explains why we need to get the building blocks right...and looks at putting together combinations and variations to take away and and use.  This workshop is ideal for anyone considering the JWAAD Foundation or Diploma course as it is an introduction to the JWAAD terminology and moves.
Level: Can be pitched at different levels.
Duration: 2 - 3 hours

 

Modern Oriental
Modern moves from Cairo to a piece of Oriental music. Includes some use of veil. Part choreography,part improvisation. Technique and step combinations are covered first then incorporate them with the music.
Level: Intermediate
Duration: 3 - 4 hours

 

Exploring Baladi
A look at the different types of music and songs that fall into the genre we call 'baladi'.  How do you dance to a piece of baladi to make it feel like baladi.  Myths and facts explored and exposed!!  Kay Taylor brings her indepth knowledge and understanding of Egyptian culture and music to help explain how she recognises, understands and responds to Baladi music.  Informative and inspirational.  One participant said she had never understood baladi until doing this workshop and it had opened up a whole new world to her. 
Level: Can be tailored to different levels
Duration: 2 hours general level or 3 - 4 hours more in depth/higher level.
