Learn How to Dance    Workshops  With Kay Taylor
E-mails received after belly dance workshops with Kay:
In Leeds:  I just wanted to tell you that these workshops were the best i have ever been to. I am a teacher in Grimsby and I do know Kay and I have been to many a workshop both at Yorkshire Dance Centre and various other venues. The studio is warm, large and comfortable with a great floor and Kay teaches hands-on with many opportunites to grasp the content.  She is fun and approachable and the workshops are priced such that it is even worth our while to travel from Grimsby for them.  Obviously it is to our advantage that there were two workshops.  Had there been only one or had it been of short duration it wouldn't be worth it for us to travel that distance.  Eren

Celebrating Dance in Devon:  Hi just a brief note to thank you very much for the wonderful, but brief workshop.  I and many others found it probably the most informative of the whole weekend.  I would love to come to one of your other workshops, but as I live in Wiltshire its a bit of a way, so I will keep my eyes on your site and see when or if you come closer so I can come.  My son lives near Coventry so I could travel that far.  Luisa

Tullie House, Carlisle.  Evaluation forms arranged by venue:

"Excellent - well explained and demonstrated with lots of individual attention" "Excellent - sensitive to all needs, good on individual tuition, learning - well broken down into small sequenced steps. Lovely personality. Would come again." "Really good fun, lots to take away and practice." "Liked how tutor was particular about how to do proper movements - really enjoyed." "Very enthusiastic, fun and well informed".

Workshop Options:

Effective Entrances:

This can be pitched at any level and is a fun look at making an entrance with impact.  The higher level it is pitched at, the more we go into performance skills & bring technique into consideration.  If at a lower level, it is more a confidence builder & lead into giving that solo a go!

Open level or Intermediate - 2 hours as a fun class.  4 hours if more in depth / higher level.

From Folk to Funk:

Looking at the changes through the different styles of dance:  Folk, Baladi, Oriental, Techno.  Some discussion on musical styles and appropriate feel / technique.

This workshop needs to be 3.5 or 4 hours.

Meanings and Gestures:

Help for non Arabic speaking dancers to identify key words and make the most of them.  Can be pitched at any level and any length.

Basics and Beyond:

This can be pitched for any level.  It is amazing what bad habits we pick up as we go along.  From posture to precision.  Ensuring basic moves are correct, building on them & adding more complexity as the participants can cope with.  It is different every time as Kay works with what she can see is needed generally in the group.  Min - 2 hours

Mawood:

Kay's choreography to a piece of techno music arranged by Said Murad.  Modern and funky.  Some interesting combinations.  A dance with attitude!

Open level - 2 hours

Techno Technique:

As it says - can be pitched at any level - modern precise technique from basic to intermediate using techno music.  Any level - any length.

Baladi Babes:

Using a modern piece of baladi music, this class allows you to explore the baladi style used in Cairo today.  Fun and upbeat with sensual slow sections.  Some improvisation required.

Intermediate - 3.5 - 4 hours.

Baladi basics & beyond:

Explore the baladi style of music and dance.  Some discussion but mainly dance.  Starting with basics and building on them.  Technique & interpretation - you take it to your own level.

Open level - 2 - 3 hours.

Modern Oriental:

Modern moves from Cairo to a piece of Oriental music.  Includes some use of veil.  Part choreography, part improvisation.  Technique and step combinations are covered first then incorporate them with the music.

Intermediate.  3 - 4 hours.

Oriental with veil improvisation:

Using a popular piece of music (Bahlan Beek), Kay teaches some choreography and incorporates veil improvisation within the dance.  Can be aimed at different levels.  3 - 4 hours.

If there is a particular subject you would like covered, e-mail or ring Kay to discuss it.

Workshop charges:

£60 per hour + travel (and accommodation if necessary.  Min 4 hours teaching).  If Kay is travelling to you for the weekend, she is happy to do some private lessons as well.  These should not be offered to beginners - dancers of intermediate level will get the most out of them.  Discuss with Kay before arranging these.
