As I started seeing
more dancers in Cairo, I wanted to know where they had learnt, who had
taught them. Again and again, one name came up: Raqia Hassan.
She is a master
choreographer and experienced teacher. I am a fan. If you are in
Cairo, try and have a class with her. Raqia trained with the Reda
folkloric troupe then started teaching oriental dance.
Her choreographies
are very intricate - lots of concentration required - but a great sense
of achievement at the end. Many current Cairo dancers as well as
foreign dancers go to Raqia to learn a piece of choreography to
incorporate in their show.

bottom are from the group on the Rakassa adventure, April 2004.
For many of them, Raqia's was their favourite class. She works you
hard yet you have great fun at the same time.
Raqia organises the 'Ahlan wa
Sahlan' festival each year. Something everyone should experience
at least once!
