Nibal is one of the
most generous people I know. She and her husband Mohammed took me under
their wing, into their home and made me welcome. I met them through
Nadia Hamdi who had spent time with me in England whilst teaching
workshops. I love Nadia and her enthusiasm for dancing. When Mohammed
and Nibal got married and an apartment of their own, I had a standing
invitation to go and stay. Whilst I was in Cairo for three months, I
would spend time every week with them. I got to see Nadia and play with
Salah. Nibal taught me how to cook Kosherie (a local Egyptian dish) and
macaroni bechemal amongst other things. We had many conversations
finding out more about each other and our different cultures.
Nibal wanted to show
me Islamic Cairo and the fabulous mosques. She loves the history and
culture of her people. She took me out to Kardassa, galabaya village,
and bartered on my behalf. She introduced me to asab, the local sugar
cane drink. 'I think you will drink Cairo dry of asab', she told me as
I developed a love of it.
Now Nibal helps with
groups, she shows them the culture and history of Cairo. She is also
happy to chat generally and give people an insight into Egyptian life
today. She is one of the best ambassadors that modern Egypt could
have.
Nibal now has her own
website, click here to visit.
