THE FARHA FESTIVAL

Workshops on Farha Festival:

Sara Farouk & Emad el Rashidy

Dancing to the music of Farid el Atrash
This looks at some well know music played on the oud and sung by Farid el Atrash. Emad is a master oud player and interprets these pieces beautifully.
Sara will lead the dance part of the sessions, looking at how to interpret the music. These two make an incredible combination. Whatever your level, this is a fabulous class.

The Oud through the ages.
Forerunner to the English lute and other similar instruments, the oud has a beautiful mellow quality.
Emad will play styles of oud music popular in different periods and explain the history of the oud.
Sara will look at the different styles of dance with each era. If you have any interest in music, this promises to be a fascinating session.

Sing along with Emad .....
In this session, you learn how to sing an arabic classic. I can't sing - but it is such good fun - you can sing along with the band later .....

Understanding classical Egyptian compositions
Leila will discuss the structure of classical Egyptian music, using the band to demonstrate.
Whatever level you are, this gives you a fascinating insight into the music and makes dancing to it so much easier.

Sha'abi
For a complete contrast, Leila will lead a sha'abi session. Sha'abi is Egyptian street music. Often quite 'raw', the lyrics can either be nonsense or political.
The music is funky and great to dance to. Leila explores how to adapt your stage persona and style to suit sha'abi. Much more relaxed and earthier than oriental style.

Getting the most from your band
Yasmina looks at how to get the most from a band. How to interact with them & how to direct them.
Yasmina will explore in depth one piece of music and look at the difference it makes when you get the band to embellish different accents / aspects.

Baladi Live
Yasmina will focus on improvisational baladi. How baladi is structured and how to dance to it effectively.
What instruments are typically 'baladi' and how to interpret them. This is an incredible opportunity to dance with live music in a structured way.

Saidi Chreography - Reda style
Kazafy was principal dancer in the Reda troupe for many years. He is a joy to watch. Powerful & graceful.
Kazafy is teaching a choreography in the typical Reda style but with his own twist.
The choreography will include boys from a folklore troupe so you get to experience a full choreography with boys!

Step combinations
Kazafy will look at different steps, styles and combinations. This will give you loads of material to take away and use in your own dance.
He will include Saidi, Nubian, Hagalla & Oriental styles. Accompanied by tabla to get basic steps then showing how they fit with music.
